Can apple antioxidants make up for deficiencies in essential vitamins?

Christine wrote in yesterday with an interesting question:
______________________________________

“I am considering ordering [your apple poly capsules], but would like to ask a few questions. The 1st question is, would you consider this a multi-vitamin? Or would it still be good to take an all natural or herbal multi-vitamin with this? The reasons that I am interested in this is for my hair and my husband’s lack of energy due to a health problem that he has.”
______________________________________

Dear Christine,

Thank you for your interest and your questions.

Apple PolyTM is not a multivitamin, but rather a pure single-ingredient supplement. Nevertheless, your question is a good one, because the biological effects and range of health conditions addressed by this single supplement are indeed “multiple.”

Some researchers consider apple phytochemicals may be more important than vitamins C and E. That’s quite a statement, and not one I can make unequivocally. However, scientists at UMass have reported that apple phytochemicals can actually “make up” for deficiencies of other nutrients in the brains of aging mice.

This is not to suggest that one could live on apple pills alone. You need healthy fats, carbohydrates, proteins and other nutrients, and you can get most of these through a healthy diet. High antioxidant foods (fruits, veggies, nuts, beans, leafy greens) and drinks (teas, whole juices) are very important. You may want to take a (good) multivitamin (not Centrum, which has aluminum in it) to make sure your micronutrient needs are covered.

(The exception to my vitamin rule is vitamin D3, which emerging research shows is incredibly important, and in which most Americans are deficient. I take 1000 to 2000 i.u./day on the recommendation of researchers and doctors I respect.)

As for antioxidant supplements, there is nothing better than this one. Guaranteed.

In addition to apple polyphenols and D3, I take R-lipoic acid, grape seed extract, and pomegranate extract regularly, and other antioxidants as they interest me. I take a multivitamin occasionally, but I make it a point to eat healthy fats (avocado, EV olive oil, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, salmon, sardines) fresh leafy dark green vegetables, whole grain breads, onions, fruit (though not as much as I should because organic is very hard to find here), and spices (peppers, ginger, turmeric.) I eat very little processed food, fast food, microwaved food, dairy or beef. Your needs may be different.

To your questions of your hair and your husband’s energy, I would encourage you both to try Apple PolyTM. We have many clients who consider this supplement nearly miraculous for both conditions. And we offer it to your risk-free, with a full guarantee of your satisfaction, so you can feel free to try it and see your individual response.

In January 2006, UCLA researchers announced that they had reversed type II diabetes in human subjects in only 3 weeks. Was anybody listening?

On Physician’s First Watch today, there’s a story on a new large scale study on whole grains and diabetes. As part of the Nurses’ Health Studies, researchers at Harvard University followed 161,000 women for 12 to 18 years, and found that increased whole grain consumption correlated with a 35% reduction in diabetes risk. The study is published online in the open access journal PLOS Medicine, and is available in its entirety free at this link.

You’ll notice in the details that increased whole grain consumption correlated with decreased diabetes risk. It’s interesting to compare this 35% risk reduction from eating “more” whole grains with the results of a 2006 UCLA study actually <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-01/aps-tds010606.php" target="_blank"">reversing diabetes in 50% of patients in only 3 weeks, using all whole grains, plus vegetables, fruit, less animal fat and daily exercise.

It’s clear from these studies that some whole grains in diet is better than none. More is better than some. All whole grains is far better. All whole grains combined with fruits and vegetables, less animal fat, no trans fats and exercise is reversing diabetes II in humans in as little as 3 weeks.

Now, add in healthy monounsaturated fats (olive, avocado), omega-3 rich fats (wild cold water fish, krill, flax), high potency phytonutrient/antioxidant rich foods and extracts (broccoli sprouts, kidney/pinto/black beans, mushrooms, pomegranate, blueberries, cranberries, red wine, Apple Poly) and spices (tea, turmeric, ginger, pepper, cinnamon), and watch what happens to your blood sugar, your cholesterol, your blood pressure, and your waistline.

Almost no one in America eats like this. But that’s OK. You don’t have to do it all at once.

What the Harvard study shows is that even adding some whole grains will make a difference. Cut down on trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and white bread. Then, eat an apple. Have some blueberries. Drink a cup of tea, and a glass of beaujolais. Sprinkle some cinnamon on your toast. Switch to EV olive oil and vinegar on your salad. Grill some salmon instead of a steak. Take a morning or evening walk. Treat yourself to some high-cocoa dark chocolate, or cocoa extracts if you can’t eat the sugar. Ask me, or the USDA, for a list of <a href="http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/1999/990208.htm" target="_blank"">high-ORAC foods, and eat some every day.

Make a few easy changes. Make the changes that taste good, relax you, make you feel better. Personally, I love every one of the healthy foods I’ve listed. But you may not. Find the ones you like, and add them in. C’mon, I know you like chocolate at least…

Hi,

“Please disregard my e-mail below. I just CAN”T cancel Apply Poly. My skin has been feeling so soft that I’ve decided to not cancel my auto-shipment. Please continue my auto-shipment order ID of (xxxxxxx).”

Dear Rebekah,

I’m delighted that you’re getting such good results in your skin. I notice the same thing in my facial skin- much softer and more supple. One of the most important things to remember is that when you see these effects in an external organ (skin), the same thing is happening in your internal organs. Age-related diseases are generally “hardening” processes. When your tissues and organs are softer and more supple, you’re effectively staying younger. And that is a wonderful result.

Thanks again,
David

____________________________

At Apple Poly, we talk a lot about the great fat loss and hair growth properties of this incredibly useful supplement. But we don’t talk enough about its skin effects, and the implications of those benefits.

Softer skin is a clear sign of a more youthful body. Think about it. What’s softer than a baby’s skin? As infants, we are positively teeming with natural antioxidants, levels of which begin to decline as they mature. After age 25, most of us begin to see signs of the decline of natural hormones and enzymes that keep us young, supple, soft and smooth.

When you can take a supplement that clearly and visibly improves the texture and character of your skin, you can be sure that similar effects are happening throughout your body. It’s a sure sign that these antioxidants are being absorbed and utilized, and the the product is potent enough to make clear, postive biological changes.

We know that from the science, and from the experience of thousands of users. But when you find it happening in your own body, you know it too.

________________

Hi David,

I read quite a few articles and am an user of Apple Poly. My concern is whether this product is injurious to health. Like there are usually hidden contents in many weight loss supplements and they may cause serious damage in the longrun. I am worried if that could be the case here. It is all right not to live up to the expectations as far as weight loss is concerned as long as I am healthy and fine in the future years.

Also, approximately how long do you think it is all right to take Apple Poly? Have you done any clinical studies to reflect the long term effect of the product?

How long do you think it takes to get the belly fat reduced? My metabolism is really not slow but i seem to put on weight and specifically around the midsection and thighs although I am young, exercise regularly and eat healthy. Maybe once a week I splurge, sometimes I try not to do that too!! It’s just frustrating to be packing up when I am really careful about my diet and exercise routine. I have been using Apple Poly for 3 weeks with 3/4 capsules per day.

Thanks, Taniya

Hi Taniya, thanks for your questions. Apple Poly is one of the safest products you can take. It’s entirely natural, non-toxic in every animal and human study, and water-soluble, so there is no buildup in the liver and other tissues over time. We have a new clinical study in humans over the weekend relating to exercise performance. The researchers reiterate the safety of the product.

If you go to www.applepolyphenols.com and click on the “Safety” link, you can read some of the safety studies for yourself.

There are no long-term clinical studies on apple polyphenol extract consumption, because its a new product. I’ve been taking high doses every day since before we introduced the product nearly 3 years ago. The effects on my health are overwhelmingly positive. It’s also used in pediatric medicine in Japan.

Everyone is different in time to response. Over time, it will reshape your body and alter your muscle to fat ratio. You might want to talk to Julia in our office about her experience- she’s now lost 30 pounds, and all her friends and family are telling her how great she looks.

Kash wrote in today with a complex set of symptoms:

“Hi, this is Kash. I too have had high bp and I am on medication. I also have diabetes, high cholesterol and high triglycerides. I do not want to go on Statins although I have been prescribed Vytorin. I have started on Apple Cider Vinegar, I tbsp a day. I am a Vegetarian. Will PP help? Can I take Cinammon being a diabetic?”
_________________________

Hi Kash, thanks for your questions.

It’s surprising to see all these symptoms in a vegetarian. Eating less meat can usually help all of these symptoms. Since you’re already doing that, I would check your dairy intake. There is something in your diet still causing problems.

If you are taking Metformin (glucophage), a common diabetes medication, you should know that recent studies indicate that long-term use can create a vitamin b12 deficiency. B12 must be taken in sublingual or injectable form to absorb. It’s destroyed in digestion.

High dose grape seed extract (Purple Poly) can lower blood pressure in some people. We are also seeing dramatically lower blood pressure with use of high dose resveratrol. Its effects are strong and almost immediate.

For blood sugar control in diabetes, the most important natural methods are exercise, essential fatty acids (salmon and other fatty fish, olive oil, fish oil, krill oil), cinnamon, ginger and curcumin, and konjac glucommanan, a Japanese soluble fiber. Apple Poly also attenuates blood sugar swings.

The damage from diabetes is now widely recognized in research circles to be caused by excess oxidative stress. High dose antioxidants are critical to prevent damage to nerves, kidneys and circulatory tissues. Vitamin C, apple polyphenols, grape seed extract and lipoic acid are all important in preventing irreversible neuropathies.

Just two weeks after I announced our new SuperResveratrol formula, we’re nearly sold out. If you want to try the highest purity clinical strength resveratrol, please get your order in this now at www.applepoly.com/new.

Resveratrol extends life span in every species tested to date. Harvard University studies report amazing stamina gains in lab animals with even higher doses- gains as high as 100%. We are excited about the implications of this research for athletes, especially in endurance sports. Imagine for a moment what even a 20% gain in endurance could do for a bicyclist or marathon runner, a soccer player or Olympic athlete. Imagine the advantage in performance and stamina for any athlete, if these results translate to humans.

And that’s the key. In order to get the astounding results in stamina and life span extension, large doses of resveratrol are required. The relevant dosage in humans, extrapolated from animal tests, start at a gram of resveratrol per day.

Every resveratrol supplement we’ve analyzed is inadequate in dosage and/or purity. Most deliver only 20 to 40 milligrams of trans-resveratrol. Even the strongest offer around 100 mg. The average person needs ten to fifteen times that amount for a relevant dose. The handful of stronger extracts I’ve found are not pure enough- most are 50% concentrations. Because high-dose resveratrol is an experimental dose in humans, it’s critical to take the purest extract you can find. If you don’t, you’re loading up on unknown components and alkaloids that may not be beneficial, or even safe.

SuperResveratrol exceeds 98% purity. Of that 98%, 100% is trans-resveratrol. It’s simply the purest natural resveratrol on the market. We wouldn’t offer it otherwise. No additives, no rice bran fillers, assayed for purity.

And while we wait for studies that show stamina gains in humans, I will tell you that my own experience indicates that these performance gains will indeed translate to humans to some degree. After a 13 hour workday last Wednesday, I was astonished to find that I still felt energized and ready to go. If you’re looking for gains in health, life span, athletic performance, or simply personal productivity, this is a breakthrough supplement.

Dear David,

Here’s my success with Apple Poly:

I have suffered from chronic fatigue for many years and became quite ill in 2005 with several viruses, bacterial and fungal infections. Work was almost impossible. I started on alternative health programs, which took about 5-6 hours a day of my time and after about 8 months felt dramatically better. I was able to work and had a good amount of energy but my health was still delicate and I had to do everything perfectly or I could become easily fatigued. During my illness I lost a large amount of hair that unfortunately did not come back after my health returned and I continued to have steady hairloss.

I started AP six months ago and was taking 1-2 caps per day. I noticed an increase of energy and found that I could deviate from my strict diet without bad consequences now, which was a first. After 3 months on AP, I increased my dose to 3-5 caps per day and after a few weeks I noticed big changes in my energy level. I found that even if I slept less than I normally needed and ate poorly, I had good, sustained energy all day. Then, I began noticing new hair growth and I look forward to getting back all of my hair in the months to come.

Another interesting thing that happened after several months on AP was I had a test done by a machine that measures carotenoid levels through your skin. It gives an indication of how high your antioxidant levels are. The woman testing me said she very rarely saw anyone with a level as high as mine. I attribute this to AP’s very high ORAC capability.

And finally, I’ve noticed that my skin quality has gotten considerably better. I used to easily get itchy, patches or lesions on my legs and other areas, even after months on health regimens and supplements. After a few months on AP, I no longer get these lesions so needless to say, I’m delighted with AP and will always take this product. Thank you David for all you do!

Kind regards,
Leslie Newman

This email expresses several very important points. One is the relationship between hair loss and overall health. Too often, hair loss is viewed as an unrelated disease, rather than a symptom of a larger problem. In Leslie’s case, it’s clear that her hair loss is a symptom of overall illness. The movement toward better hair growth and better health are the same.

Also, Leslie understands that curing hair loss is not an overnight process. Her experience with Apple Poly over months of use is key. The longer you provide your body with the healing power of these powerful phytochemicals, the better results you will see. And as apple procyanidins are working to improve follicle function, they are also improving the function and health of other vital organ systems- heart, brain, skin, kidneys, liver and more.

There are many great things about what I do for a living. I get to discover, find, use and share the most amazing natural extracts on the cutting edge of health science. I get to indulge my passion for health research and discovery as part of my “job.” I make a living doing something I love. Privileges all.

But the reward that comes from helping someone experience healing and relief from suffering trump all of these.

___________________________________

Dear Leslie,

I am so grateful to you for taking the time to share your story. I am even more grateful to be a small part in the healing and improvement you have experienced.

You are the reason we brought this product to the market two years ago, Leslie. We truly believe it is the most healthful natural agent we’ve ever come across. Helping someone in your situation makes our efforts worthwhile.

In return for your wonderful testimonial, I want to offer you a complimentary bottle of Apple Poly. You may use it yourself if you wish, but the real intent is to allow you to share it with someone else who might benefit from it as you have. In this way, you have an opportunity to share in the healing of another- the same gift you have given me this morning.

The first-ever pure, clinical strength trans-resveratrol supplement is now available to consumers.

If you missed the media frenzy over this red wine polyphenol last fall, you may not know that Harvard scientists have successfully increased life span in mammals, using only this natural compound. Here is a link to download the New York Times article.

These are not the first reports of resveratrol’s ability to extend life. But with the Times, Wall Street Journal, and ABC and CBS News coverage, the health benefits of polyphenols are more widely known than ever before. This CBS News Video is a good quick overview of recent developments.

Since the Harvard study was announced, we’ve been testing various resveratrol-rich plant extracts, hoping to find one with the purity and potency similar to the formula the Harvard scientists are using. I’m very glad to announce that it will be available for sale beginning in March 2007.

I’m sure you know that there are other resveratrol supplements on the market. None of them use adequate amounts of pure-form trans-resveratrol. When you consider that the Harvard mice are taking a dose equivalent to 1000 bottles of red wine a day, that’s not surprising. We’ve managed to get the same dose into 2-4 daily pills, depending on your body weight.

To get the equivalent dose that lengthens life span in mice, plug in your body weight in pounds to this formula:

(Body Weight / 2.2) * 24

In English, your weight in pounds, divided by 2.2, times 24. The answer is the number of milligrams you need daily for an equivalent dose.

As usual, I am personally experimenting with much higher doses, up to 7 grams per day, without ill effects. At this dosage, there is an incredible surge of energy and long term stamina.

The dose of 24 mg/kg of body weight is an experimental dose in humans. There are no long term human studies, and won’t ever be, unless a way is found to make resveratrol a prescription drug. Which they are working on, believe me. And the effort is backed by millions of dollars.

How long will we be able to sell SuperResveratrol on the open market? I don’t know. Can our government move at any time to ban or restrict access to a natural compound that may represent the most radical advance in antiaging science yet?

Oh yes.

We are taking preorders now for March 2007 delivery at www.applepoly.com/new

In recent months, a lot of exciting new science has been published in the field of hair loss and hair regrowth in male pattern baldness. I’ve decided that a thorough review of the new discoveries, therapies and theories is in order. And since I can’t find one, I’ll have to write it.

I’m currently offering this new information in a series of free special reports called “New Science 2007: Regrow Your Hair, Starting Now.” Each report will focus on the practical use of these discoveries.

New research in hair loss increasingly dovetails with current antiaging science. The latest reports point to very similar mechanisms at work in the hair follicle, which may help explain many of the unknowns, problems, and paradoxes in current understanding of follicle dysfunction and atrophy. A new theory is emerging, which I am terming the Free Radical Theory of Hair Loss.

As you may guess, my primary interest is in the use of safe, natural concentrated plant compounds that work in the follicle much as they do in other organ systems of the body- to preserve, protect, improve function, and slow or reverse the deleterious effects ordinarily associated with biological aging.

In your lifetime, you have seen many impossible things come true: telephones without wires, pocket-sized computers, space shuttles and moon landings. We now take these impossible things for granted.

In the fields of molecular nutrition and antiaging medicine, “impossible” advances are happening rapidly- and many have already happened. We now have agents that are proven to slow, and in some cases reverse, certain symptoms of the master disease. Our work focuses on the safe, natural phytochemical agents that have these proven properties.

I am here to tell you that the world is no longer flat. Some understand this and will benefit far sooner. Most of our generation will march in lockstep to the grave, with a great deal of needless suffering on the way. Flat-worlders to the end.

I am here to present a new paradigm.

First, we must separate chronological age from biological age. Aging does not have to equal age-related disease and decline. I am 50 this year, and healthy by any measure. I am often judged to be 10 years younger. I have all my hair, my mind is sharp, my skin shows little wrinkling. Of course, I do not discount being blessed with good genes. But besides choosing our parents wisely, what can we do to slow age-related disease and decline?

The New Paradigm of Aging proposes the following:

1) Biological aging can and must be separated from chronological aging. Chronological aging is defined as length of life span of the organism. Biological aging is defined as the age-related disease and decline of the organism.

2) Every disease known to be related to, an ordinary consequence of, or commonly exacerbated by chronological aging is redefined as a symptom of the master disease- biological aging.

3) There exist today known agents that are proven in cell, animal and human studies to slow and even reverse certain symptoms of biological aging without damage to the organism.

4) Increases in quality of life span supercede improvements in quantity of life span. Extension of chronological age, while interesting and worthy of study, is useless without concomitant increase in quality of life span.

5) Each individual must decide at what point the existing research is sufficient to justify personal use of a particular therapy to interfere in biological aging.

6) A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to take full advantage of present and future advances.

7) Rapid and inevitable advances in research and treatments will benefit only those who remain alive and healthy enough to utilize them.

There is no financial incentive for any doctor, drug company, or government to help you stay healthier or live longer. In fact, powerful financial disincentives are deeply entrenched.

9) Every single substance the organism absorbs- food, water, nutrient, hormone, light wave, vibration, and pathogen- attenuates the biological aging of the organism. Consequently, every incidence of absorption is an opportunity to positively or negatively effect biological aging.

10) The world is no longer flat.

This new paradigm relegates the possibility of regrowing hair, for instance, to secondary importance. If unwanted hair loss is one symptom of aging, and if we are able not only to slow its progression but in some cases actually reverse this symptom, it begs the larger and much more important question: how is the biological aging of the organism affected? Even more intriguing: if an agent is able to reinvigorate hair follicles to a more youthful state of function, what else can it do? What else is going on in other organ systems, tissues and cells of the organism?

I propose that hair growth and central adiposity are important as indicators of the overall state of biological aging, the health of the organism, and its quality of life. Now we’re getting somewhere.

From this vantage point, it is easier to understand how one agent may have such disparate effects in the organism- in this example, reducing hair loss and organ fat. The latest research indicates that free radical activity is a factor in over 100 human diseases. Damage to the organism and its decline in function can be measured, studied and affected at the molecular level.

The soundness of this theory- the Free Radical Theory of Aging, proposed in 1950 by Denham Harman, MD- is overwhelmingly supported in 50+ years of research. The problem is this: you must have agents that are potent and available enough to affect the redox balance of the organism. They must be absorbed in doses that are biologically relevant.

Agents that are: 1) potent enough to affect the human body’s antioxidant balance, 2) able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, and 3) cause no collateral damage to the organism, are very recent developments. We have identified certain phytochemical agents with all of these qualities. More and better ones are on the way.

As stated above, exogenous antioxidants are not the whole answer to biological aging. The new paradigm calls for a multidisciplinary approach. But I can say without hesitation that if you are not currently using agents that meet these criteria on a daily basis, you do not understand the single most important advantage you have right now to slow biological aging.

I will stop here, before this turns into my next book.

At 50, I personally spend over a thousand dollars a month on my own antiaging program. Few people are this serious, but I must ask them: “What is more important than increasing the quality of your health and life?” For me, there aren’t many things more important. They have names like wife, sister, brother, son and daughter and precious grandchild. Beyond these, nothing is more important to me than staying healthy, youthful, disease- and pain-free for as long as possible, no matter how “impossible” the flat-worlders insist it is.

The impossibilities of the past are the technologies of the future. You have witnessed it in your own lifetime.

If you’ve read this far, congratulations. You are an educated, thoughtful person and I look forward to a dialogue with you. You may still be skeptical. That’s fine.

Here is the important question.

What if I’m right?
